Caption: "Born Sarah Breedlove to parents who were slaves on a Louisiana plantation, Madam C. J. Walker was a businesswoman whose rise was unprecedented. In the late 19th century, most Americans didn't have access to indoor plumbing and often developed scalp diseases and suffered hair loss as a result of infrequent washing. Walker ...concocted a sulfur-containing ointment that cleansed hair follicles and encouraged healthier hair growth. She soon opened a factory to produce and sell her Wonderful Hair Grower, and by the time of her death in 1919 at the age of 51, she had become the first self-made American woman millionaire, according to the Guinness Book of World Records" (The Cat's Meow, Facebook).
